My little dog Gertie ran after the blowing leaves. What a funny site to watch. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Gertie stop. She was looking up. As I looked up I saw a giant bird fly into the Everett Covered Bridge. Gertie and I ran inside the covered bridge to see the giant bird. Just as we entered the covered bridge we watched the giant bird fly up into the rafters. I noticed a nest in the corner with three large babies inside. The giant bird moved close to the nest. I thought to myself, that is a Blue Heron. As I looked closer, I saw the Blue Heron had a fish in its mouth. That must be their mom, I thought. She must have been fishing in the Cuyahoga River. Just then Gertie started to bark. The Blue Heron dropped the fish. It landed on Gertie's head. Little Gertie jumped. She was so surprised! As I picked up the fish, the Blue Heron flew down and landed right in front of me. I gave her the fish. The Blue Heron smiled and gave me a wink. As she flew back up to the nest, I thought I heard her say thank you. Every day Gertie and I go to the Everett Covered Bridge and visit the Blue Heron and her babies. The babies stand on the edge of the nest and wave to us. As several weeks passed, the babies grew almost as big as their mom. It was a bright sunny fall morning when Gertie and I went to Everett Covered Bridge. As we entered the covered bridge, all three babies and their mom flew down to greet us. Each of the Blue Heron's wrapped their wings around me, giving me a hug. They also patted Gertie's head. Without a sound they flew into the sky. As they flew away, the mother bird looked over her shoulder and waved goodbye. Gertie and I know that in the spring our new friends will return to Everett Covered Bridge. We can hardly wait to see them again.
