My shadow is something I often times see, It's either in front of or way behind me. It jumps when I'm jumping and runs when I run, But I'm rather confused as to where it comes from. I see it outside when the sun's shining bright, But not in the dark 'til I turn on the light, It sneaks in beside me when I am asleep Not making a sound, why not even a peep! It seems kind of funny the way that it grows, We're never the same size from head down to toe. Sometimes it is taller, as high as a tree And sometimes so small that I barely can see. It follows me everywhere all the day through, I have to get rid of it, what shall I do? Perhaps if I run I can leave it behind, Then it wouldn't be hanging around all the time. So early this morning I snuck from my bed Without waking my shadowthe old sleepyhead! I tiptoed so lightly across the wood floor, But it woke up and followed me right out the door! I raced through the hallway and ran down the stairs, Then looked back behind me but it was still there! I asked Mom about it-she grinned ear to ear, "It's the light playing games, you have nothing to fear." So now when I play there's no need to pretend, That it's really not there because now it's my friend. We'll run and we'll jump laughing all through the day, For my shadow's forever, it won't go away.
