Tomatoes are a funny fruit They look like Rudolph's' nose, They're good to eat most anytime Yes, even when it snows. And since they aren't a vegetable, You've no excuse to hide them underneath your lettuce leaf or shove them to the side. I had one on my sandwich With bologna and some cheese, But when they're soft be careful Not to pick one up and squeeze! But if you do, watch out Because they're filled with lots of seeds, Which end up on the kitchen floor, A juicy mess, indeed! They're tasty in a salad, And spaghetti sauce is great, The juice is good for breakfast But you'd rather have V-8!! Let's not forget the Ketchup that we squirt upon our fries Or in the tasty cheeseburgers your parents let you buy, We can't leave out tomatoes in the chilli grandma makes Or in her best lasagne that it takes all day to bake. I like them best in winter when I first come in the door And line my boots and mittens by the heater on the floor And sit down at the table with my bowl and biggest scoop, And dig right into crackers in my hot tomato soup.
