Children's Story: by

I used to save a lot of stuff,
Till Mother hollered, "That's Enough!"
And made me have, all day, a fear
That something nice would disappear.
I hurried home from school, to see
What damage had been done to me,
And when I went to find the rocks
I'd hidden underneath my socks,
I saw it, almost in a flash,
That all my things were in the trash!

I groped around beneath my bed
To find the skin the snake had shed,
And noticed, with the carpet bare,
That nothing that I loved was there;
My favorite hunk of termite log,
A can of worms, a friendly frog,
The flies I caught to keep him fat,
The fur from when I brushed the cat,
She even took a dried-up toad
That someone flattened on the road.

It all was gone, a tooth or two,
The jellyfish with purple goo,
The spider in the plastic cup
That ate my caterpillar up,
The starfish with the funny smell,
The salamander from the well,
A lobster claw, a robin's egg,
A broken piece of something's leg,
A face I carved in bubblegum,
A bandage from my bloody thumb.

She even took the Styrofoam
I found in dumps and dragged back home,
And tossed it all, I guess because
She didn't know how sad it was
To look around and find things gone,
You like to stare at, off and on.
I understand, she isn't mean
Just has this thing on being clean,
But still, I think I'll write a sign
That UNDERNEATH THE BED IS MINE!
